Birds nesting in hollows (tits, nuthatches, owls…) do not have enough natural nesting places on our campus. Therefore, we decided to install birdhouses here.
We provided wooden planks to construct the birdhouses, and our campus carpenter crafted them (following a manual from the web). Until today (2022/08), we have produced and placed two boxes for blue tits (they have fewer opportunities for nesting than great tits). The first new birdhouse is located near the main entrance to the main building, and the other is about 20 metres behind the IMB canteen.
Our colleague Tomáš Petrásek has been placing self-made birdhouses around the campus for several years. Until today, he has produced and installed about a hundred of them (around ten are on our campus).
In the future, we plan to map all the birdhouses on the campus and document which birds nest in them. Subsequently, we would like to produce more birdhouses for other species and place them around the campus.
How could I help?
- If you have untapped old wooden planks (no plywood, just nature-wooden, width at least 15 cm) that you would be willing to donate to build birdhouses, please let us know. Any such wooden plank (board) will help.
- You can also help us watch what bird species have settled in the birdhouses.
- Help directly – make a birdhouse and hang it around your home (cottage).
- Share your creations and insights on how your birdhouses work with others.
